Ribeca – Perricone: The relic grape variety recovered by Firriato
Firriato’s Ribeca Perricone is born from the grapes of a native Sicilian grape variety, grown in the sun-drenched vineyards of the Pianoro Cuddìa Estate. Here the calcareous and clayey soil, together with a favorable exposure to the south and southwest, provides an ideal environment for the growth of this rare grape variety.
Carefully hand-picked, the bunches undergo traditional fermentation, followed by a 12-month aging in French oak barriques. The result is a good-bodied and round wine, with fine and elegant tannins and a pleasantly fresh finish.
In the glass, Ribeca appears with an intense color that recalls ruby. Its aromatic profile offers a scale of fruity notes, from delicate tones of blackberry, plum and marasca cherry, accompanied by emphatic nuances of licorice, ginger, cloves, and juniper berries. A true journey of flavors, testifying to the excellence of Firriato’s work in enhancing the Perricone grape variety.
Firriato
Firriato is one of the most important realities of Sicilian wine, and has contributed significantly to the rebirth and relaunch of the island’s viticulture. Founded in the 80s by the initiative of the Di Gaetano family, today Firriato owns estates in various areas of Sicily: in Trapani, in Favignana, and on Etna, different territories that allow the winery to offer a very wide range of wines of excellent quality level.
The company has invested primarily in the enhancement of native varieties, such as Perricone, successfully cultivated in the Pianoro Cuddìa Estate. Firriato is also famous for its Calamoni estates in Favignana and Cavanera on Etna, both characterized by unique terroirs that give rise to wines of great elegance and character. Firriato is therefore an emblematic example of how to create international excellence, enhancing Sicilian native grapes and territories.
