Maria Costanza red – Sicily DOP, organic
Maria Costanza red is a premium organic certified wine that was first produced in 1991. This wine perfectly embodies the potential of the Nero d’Avola grape variety. It is sourced from the Giuseppina, Milici and Munti vineyards, which are on average 20 to 30 years old and are located on a marl plateau with a fairly deep organic clay soil, rich in skeleton.
The harvest takes place in mid-October through manual selection of the bunches, followed by careful and meticulous winemaking. After a maceration of 15 days, the grapes complete the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation partly in oak barrels and partly in steel. The wine matures for about 18 months, divided between barrique and steel, and then further refines in the bottle.
Maria Costanza red presents itself with an intense red color and purple reflections. On the nose, it offers clear floral scents and fruity notes of marasca cherry, closing with spices and aromatic vegetables such as nettle and fig leaf. In the mouth, the wine is soft, elegant, and velvety, with exceptional persistence that leaves an unforgettable memory.
Located in Campobello di Licata, the Milazzo winery is a historic Sicilian family business that has been dedicated to viticulture for five generations. A pioneer in the vinification of native grape varieties and Metodo Classico sparkling wine in Sicily, it is now led by Giuseppina Milazzo and Saverio Lo Leggio, who continue to enhance family traditions with a strong commitment to sustainability and organic farming.
With its 97 hectares of vineyard located in the Terre della Baronia area, the winery cultivates both native grape varieties such as Inzolia, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, Nerello Cappuccio, and Perricone, as well as international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viognier, and Pinot Noir, all certified organic since 2012.
Milazzo’s philosophy is centered on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and attention to manual pruning and vine density, to produce structured and aromatic wines, suitable for aging. The kingfisher, a symbol of uncontaminated environments, is the figure that stands out on the neck of their bottles, symbolizing their dedication to genuineness and sustainability.
